Tuesday Garden Party - Mega Fincho?

Remember last week, when I showed you the super-cool finch feeder we put out?  (You can get them on Amazon for those interested....)

Well, as we were watching or finches fight for spots on the feeder, playing Fincho!, we said to ourselves... "What could be better than a 24 finch feeder?"

And the natural answer to that question is this:

A 121 finch feeder!  The Mr designed and built this feeder that we like to call the Finch Organ (because it kind of looks like an organ....) so that we can watch 121 finches feed at one time!

Is that not the coolest thing ever?

We haven't had 121 finches yet, but we've had over 35.  The "word" will get out in finchland, and soon we'll be playing MegaFincho!

They are cute, aren't they?

We found one side effect of a large feeder.  A large amount of food on the ground.

Which leads to a second side effect.  Mourning doves.  Apparently they like the finch food too.

So does this California Towhee.

The hummingbird doesn't, but I liked him just the same.

And now that we've invited all of these birds into our yard, I am left with one question.  Beaks or teeth?

The few tomatoes we have are suddenly being eaten.  I can't tell if this comes from birds or rats or a different animal.  Any ideas?

We're watching and waiting for our tomatoes to start really growing. Check back next week to see how they are doing. In the meantime, check out An Oregon Cottage for her weekly Garden Party.

  1. We were attacked by the Tomato Horn Worm. You can read my post today linked to the Garden Party to see the pictures of the damage. Looks like the same little critter chowed on yours too.

  2. As I am about to type in your comments, up you pop at my place with a comment! That's spooky! I love your new feeder. Did The Mr. use a bit too large hole for the seed? I have doves that have been cleaning up seed around here, too. A wonderful by product of finch.

  3. How cool is that?! I love that feeder! We have free range chickens that clean up any spilled seeds - but I think the mourning doves are more fun!

  5. Amazing feeder! We always attracted birds to our yard, until we got cats...Now we run an emergency hospital for "avain victims of feline asault" and have tried to put out the word that our property is no longer safe.

  7. OK, so 24 is not enough, so you move up to...121? You guys don't do things small, huh? :-) Can hardly wait to see it full- you'll have to submit it to some wildlife photo place- amazing.

Yup, I would agree with Candi, tomato horn worm. You should be able to see them, though, if you look closely as they get pretty big and then...squash those puppies!

    Thanks for the link-up!

  10. I love that you have such a cool birdfeeder. Do you get squirrels?

We don't have a feeder out this year, but the feeder brought lots of deer. Then the bear. Which is why we don't have a feeder. Only a birdbath.

  12. One of my favorite birds to watch is a bright yellow goldfinch so I hope you get some great pictures of those and share!

Man, I hope I don't get that horn worm thing in my tomatoes - I'd be P.O.'d!

  13. Wow, that's the most amazing finch feeder I have ever seen anywhere! It must look really cool when it gets filled with finches. You're probably making lots of other birds really jealous!

  14. Oh my... that is one big finch feeder!!

My hunny put up a plain ol' wooden bird feeder the other day in hopes that it would distract the birds from my tomatoes so far I think all its doing is attracting way more birds in to our yard. The thing holds sooo much food and yet we are refilling it daily. Who knew those little suckers could eat so much!
