Happy Flag Day!

Flag Day is celebrated today. commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened June 14 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777.

To me the flag is a symbol of our freedom, and a reminder of all of those who fought to give us that freedom. It is a symbol of the responsibility that we all have to keep alive the spirit of the United States of America.

I keep my patriotic decorations up all summer - and I like to serve fun patriotic dishes too.  Here are a few of my favorites:

What is your favorite patriotic recipe?

Tuesday Garden Party - Fall is the New Spring

On September 11, 2001, terrorists changed the lives of all of us.

Take a moment today to remember those who lost their lives as a result of the attacks of a few people filled with hatred.

I will always remember.

Gardenwise, we had a busy week.

Cayenne busting out all over.

Same with jalapenos.  These are only two of the many plants.

Hello Ghost Pepper!

Welcome Scorpion!

Soon we'll be seeing Scotch Bonnets too.  What a year for hot peppers this has been!

A couple more tomatoes on the way.... from a nice volunteer.

These hydrangeas were blue when we bought them last year.  They keep growing pink and green now though, which I like a lot!

And aren't these aloe flowers pretty?  We've got a huge aloe plant (the hummingbirds love it!) - I just wish I had more uses for it.

Lemons all over the tree, along with lots of little blossoms.

Oranges on the way too.

And this?  Though it looks like a flat piece of dirt, in reality, it is peas, carrots and broccoli.  You just can't see them quite yet.

This little guy sat and watched me turn the bed, incorporate the compost and plant my seeds.  His friend left, but he watched me.

And another one of these.  I am so done with things (aside from me) eating my plants.  We haven't had carrots or broccoli before - I wonder what kind of pests we'll be finding now.

New planting - feels like spring!  We've got mustard greens and baby lettuce on the way as well.  We're sure looking forward to them!

We should see our seedlings emerge this week.  And I sure hope that we've taken care of the critter issue.  You will have to check back next week to see - in the meantime, check out An Oregon Cottage for her weekly Garden Party.

Remembering D-Day

On June 4, 1940, the last of 338,000 Allied troops escaped from Dunkirk, Belgium, across the English Channel. While Britain's retreat was a stunning success, it also effectively ceded the continent to Nazi Germany.

Approximately four years later to the day—on June 6, 1944—the Allies returned. In an attempt to pierce the 2,400-mile fortification of bunkers, landmines, and obstacles along Germany's Atlantic Wall, some 156,000 Allied troops stormed beaches on Normandy, France, in the largest amphibious assault in history. Codenamed Overlord and known as D-Day, the five-prong attack occurred along a 50-mile stretch of heavily fortified coast in an effort to reclaim the area from Nazi Germany.  It was, in the words of General Dwight Eisenhower, a crusade in which "nothing less than full victory" could be accepted.

Less than a week later, victory had been realized. The coast was secured and reinforced with more than 326,000 troops, 50,000 vehicles, and about 100,000 tons of equipment. And some 4,400 Allied troops—primarily young men from America, Canada, and England—had laid down their lives.

Normandy American Cemetery sits on a cliff overlooking Omaha Beach and the English Channel.

Take a moment today to remember those that sacrificed everything to secure our freedom. Imagine what our lives would be like if they hadn't.
