In the Garden - Week of September 27, 2013

We've certainly had one hot summer here in San Diego.  And that isn't only the weather!

How do you like this sampling of hot peppers - Anaheim, Serrano, Habanero, Cayenne, Cherry, Jalapeno....  quite a basket of heat.

But the bulk of the heat is here:

A whole lot of Ghosts!

Looks like we are in for a hot fall and winter too!  Here's our year's summary so far:

In the Garden - Week of August 18, 2013

Lots of red in my harvest this week.  Aside from the hot peppers (and we've got plenty of those!) we had lovely red strawberries, our first batch of red potatoes and some tomatoes!

Though our tomato harvest is not going to be very plentiful this year, at least the few we are getting are beautiful.

In the Garden - Week of August 11, 2013

We've had really mixed results in our garden this year.  The tomatoes have been pretty bad and the corn has been disastrous, but the peppers?  Holy cow!

Sweet pepper's are just beginning to ripen.

This is just one day's worth of hot peppers.  And the (extraordinarily prolific hydroponic) ghosts have not even started to ripen yet!

While the strawberries haven't been exceptional, we get enough for The Mr and me to have a bowl every evening.  They just keep coming, and they are so sweet!

In the Garden - Week of April 28, 2013

I call this post Hope. We've amended the soil. We've grown the seedlings. We've acclimatized them. We planted them. We've checked the irrigation schedule.

Now what we've got left is hope. Hope that that these guys {Super Sauce} grow as advertised.

Hope that we get the beautiful tomatoes that everyone says to expect.

Hope that we can keep the consarned pests away.  {Oh how I hate those pests...}

Hope that we get more strawberries like these beauties!

In the Garden - Week of April 14

As you can see, I'm in the process of doing some redecorating around here - please pardon the dust!

We've spent the last three weekends getting our garden ready.  We've weeded.  We've trimmed back the hedges so our new plants will be able to get some sun.  We've turned the soil and added our compost.  We've planted our seedling peppers and strawberries.  We've planted (more) peas and carrots.

This weekend we picked some more potatoes!

And a few carrots, peas, peppers and even a couple of cherry tomatoes.  Those are the last of last year's tomato plants though.  I pulled them all up in preparation for this week's shipment of Burpee's SuperSauce plants!  If these don't produce a ton (or there about) of tomatoes, we will switch to peppers and buy our tomatoes at the market.

And we planted the first of our corn seedlings.  I can't wait for the first bite!  Thinking it might be a while though....   ;-)

In the Garden

We had a great garden success this weekend - we harvested our first batch (?) of potatoes!

Who knew that they would be so easy to grow, and that they would taste so good?! Well, probably lots of you, but it was a surprise to me!

This was definitely a successful experiment, one that we will most certainly repeat.

We also have been eating our fill of carrots and peas this spring. I just love fresh peas!

We have an impressive start to our harvest year - with lots to come:

Tuesday Garden Party - Year of the Pepper

The Chinese Astrological Calendar may have declared this the Year of the Dragon, but on zentMRS's Garden Calendar, this is definitely the Year of the Pepper!

That's a nice representation of the peppers we've grown this summer!  We've eaten lots of fantastic peppery foods, and are looking forward to more once the ghosts and scorpions are ready.  Maybe in the next few weeks?  You will have to check back to see - in the meantime, check out An Oregon Cottage for her weekly Garden Party.

Tuesday Garden Party - Feel the Heat!

Another week of record high temps.

And every day when we come home from work, our ghost peppers look like this:

And the scorpions look like this:

They de-wilt by morning, but I have a feeling this is going to take a toll.

And it is taking a toll on some of our other plants.  The mustard greens are terribly sad.  And some of the little broccoli seedlings have fallen down on the job!

Some things don't seem to be affected.  At least not adversely.  Cayenne peppers are busting out all over:

And more jalapenos than we know what to do with (almost):

Some things are thriving.  Our sweet peppers just keep growing and growing - it's like a jungle....

... filled with sweet peppers....

... which is a good jungle to have!

The strawberries are having a mixed reaction.

Even this volunteer sunflower (?) is loving the heat!

Looks like we're in for some cooler weather (mid 80s!) towards the end of the week.  I wonder if the plants will like it?  You will have to check back next week to see - in the meantime, check out An Oregon Cottage for her weekly Garden Party.
