Tuesday Garden Party

Our strawberries are really starting to grow!

We had to put them in a net so that the birds (which we invite into our yard with all of our bird feeders and bird bath) will not eat them. Look at all of the blooms (and tiny little strawberries)!

And some are ripening - don't these look delicious! Let me tell you... they are! Though they only seem to ripen about 3 at a time. Hopefully they will pick up the pace soon.

I'd like to figure out what is turning the leaves of the plants red though. Anyone have any ideas?

Sliced strawberries. So sweet. Worth the effort to grow!

Next week - tomatoes. In the meantime, check out An Oregon Cottage for her weekly Garden Party.

What's in YOUR garden this week?

  1. Looks delish! Sorry to hear about the birds have you tried a plastic snake or owl? That's what my neighbor uses and it seems to work well for him. Of course he moves them around to keep the birds guessing.

  3. Thanks for the comment, and strawberries are my favorite! They look delicious. The birds have always eaten mine when I tried to grow them. Blessings,

  4. Ott, A - I thought about a plastic owl, but that would chase away the birds from the whole yard, not just the strawberries I think. Which would be sad, except for the strawberries... which is where we kept getting stuck. The netting works OK - I just have to keep on top of it so to speak.

Thrifty Designer - strawberry shortcake is a definite possibility.... that is, if we ever get more than 3 to ripen at once! ;-)

    Thanks for the comments friends!

  5. Yum!! You're making me hungry! I have some berries waiting to be ready. I may head the to farmer's market to see if they have some this week. My favorite strawberries are usually available early June (Hood Strawberries). They're the sweetest and juiciest. I'm jealous! Enjoy!!

  7. Those red ripe strawberries look so sweet and juicy! I am growing some as well... My daughter (2.5 yrs old) and I check regularly for red ones and love to eat them right from the plant. She eats most of it, then tosses the rest and says "here birdies... that's for you!". Enjoy them!!!

  8. I just ate my first strawberries of the season here, too. Nothing like biting into a juicy home-grown berry- it's worth a little netting! Thanks for sharing at the Tuesday Garden Party. :-)
